“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth
not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” —2nd Timothy 2:15
“Jesus was baptized to identify with a rejected remnant. We, by baptism, identify with a rejected Christ.”
—Why was Jesus Baptized?
I love the 12 minor prophets in the Old Testament; namely, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zachariah, and Malachi.
Here are three contemporary (meaning they all lived during the same time period) minor prophets who all preached during the reign of Assyria as a world power. Here’s my homemade chronology chart which helps me learn how the books and prophets of the Bible relate to each other. I find it helpful.
These MP3 audio Bible sermons are given by one of my favorite Bible scholars, Pastor J. Vernon McGee (1904-1988). Here are 10 of the minor prophets listed in order by date (NOTE: to hear these MP3’s play in order, please make sure that the “shuffle” option is deselected in your media player)…

God sent the prophet Jonah to preach to Nineveh (the capital of Assyrian Empire). The entire city repented and God spared them judgment. But 150-years later Nineveh had forgotten about God and gone back into wickedness, so God sends the prophet Nahum! Since the Assyrians already had the light but rejected it, God didn’t send Nahum to warn them, but to pronounce judgment! Jesus said if the light that be in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:23). Like America who has received the truth, they rejected it!!!
Nahum (628 BC)

Beware of religious idolatry. Seventh Day Adventists worship the Sabbath Day. Catholics worship Mary and the Popes. Lutherans worship Martin Luther. Mormons worship sex. Pentecostal and Charismatics worship familiar spirits (speaking-in-tongues, et cetera). Born-again, Bible-believing, Christians worship Jesus Christ, Who is the manifestation of the Godhead (1st Timothy 3:16; Colossians 2:9 – King James Bible).
I’d recommend starting with Dr. Rice’s books and Oliver B. Greene’s if you want to learn the Bible.
The average life of the great civilizations of the world has been about 200-years. These civilizations have progressed through the following stages—from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy back to bondage. Which of the above stages do you think we’re in? How much longer do you think our civilization is going to last?

He authored over200 great books and pamphlets. Brother Rice uses the Bible extensively in all his writings, yet puts the cookies on the bottom shelf where the average person can find them. Simple to understand, yet profound in Bible insight.

The Greeks Had A Word For It
The Greek language is uniquely suited to the communication of God’s truth, for it has modes of expression so concise and accurate in their descriptive power as to defy fullness of translation into English without becoming unwieldy. That’s one reason we have so many New Testament translations, as scholars endeavor to carry over the full import of the Greek into English. So, the careful interpreter of the Bible does well to gain access to the meaning of the Greek which stands behind our English versions.
In addition, it is helpful to know that the New Testament came to us in what is called Koine, or “common” Greek. It is not the language of the classics or the poets, but the common, ordinary language of everyday popular usage. Modern archeology has done tremendous service to the New Testament student by unearthing and clarifying Greek terms that were otherwise obscure. In so doing, the archeologist’s spade has buried the destructive critics of the New Testament record under the piles of evidence gleaned from pottery shard, parchment, and papyrus. It is encouraging to know that archeology has confirmed, not denied, the accuracy of our New Testament text, which was written in language the common people could grasp. Read Complete Work
“No Scripture,” said Spurgeon, “is exhausted by a single explanation. The flowers of God’s garden bloom not only double, but sevenfold; they are continually pouring forth fresh fragrance.”
God is good!
(by David J. Stewart, 2001)
Dr. McGee rightly states, “We’re a nation of Biblical ignoramuses! We do not know the Word of God today in this land!” (Pastor J. Vernon McGee, THRU-THE-BIBLE, commentary from Hosea 4:1-2).
